Vocal Quartet

When the performers to be featured at Music and Munch on June 25th get together, good musical things happen! Connie Holmes soprano, Anke Smeele alto, Richard Hayden tenor and Alan Robertson bass, have a way of engaging audiences, not simply because of their obvious joy in making music together, but also in the beautiful blend of their voices and the charm of their presentation.

Holmes, who was born and raised in Saskatchewan, sang in church and school choirs and studied voice in Saskatoon. She returned to singing after a career in nursing and a move to Salt Spring Island, where she joined Salt Spring Singers.

Smeele grew up in the Netherlands where music and singing were always a part of her life. She continues to sing solos, duets, quartets and in the alto section of Salt Spring Singers. She and Connie sometimes contribute with song to the "Simply Organic" organ recital series.

Hayden has also sung all his life in choral groups as a soloist in ensembles. He sings with Cantus and Salt Spring Singers and has recorded a CD of his own songs.

Robertson has sung in many church choirs, currently in the bass section of All Saints' choir and in the Salt Spring Singers. He has performed in several Music and Munch recitals and church musical ventures.

The four first performed together at a Salt Spring Singers concert in May 1999 and they have, for the past two years, continued to delight Music and Munch supporters. Their repertoire is beautifully varied, encompassing the sacred and secular, the humorous and profound.

Beth Ranney accompanies the quartet for the second time in this venue. Her experience both as a vocalist in Salt Spring Singers and for many years as a piano teacher shines through in the sensitivity with which she accompanies choral work.

This programme promises all the charm and variety which we have come to expect of these performers, with a leaning towards a theme of departure, travel and homecoming, with some interludes along the way.

Free music begins at 12:10pm at All Saints’ followed by an optional, delicious lunch for $5.50.
