In a Sunny Salt Spring Garden

In a colourful celebration of summer, the Anglican Parish of Salt Spring Island, is hosting a Flower Festival which will embrace Music and Munch programme as part of a two day event.

On Tuesday Aug.12th,visitors to All Saints' church will be treated to a feast for the eyes, of flowers and plants, together with the fragrances that such a garden atmosphere may conjure. Parishioners will be using their green fingers and creative flair, to provide a cool and tranquil haven for islanders and friends to enjoy as part of their summer pleasures.

On Wednesday l3th, Music and Munch will take place "In a Sunny Salt Spring Garden" with a delightful programme of music, song and dance. The theme of flowers and gardens and the challenges and joy they provide, offers the opportunity for light hearted musical! fun as well as reflective harmony.

Organist Barry Valentine and cellist Ellen Himmer get together to provide not only accompaniment but also charming musical interludes. Ellen first played for Music and Munch in June when she was guest accompanist to the popular vocal quartet. Barry has been accompanist and soloist in the lunchtime series since it began in 1996.

Singers Anke Smeele, Alan Robertson, Gale Hingston and Lottie Devindisch have also taken part in several Music and Munch performances. Anke and Al are perhaps best known as alto and bass in the vocal quartet and as members of Salt Spring Singers. Dancers Gale and Lottie have contributed to Anglican Parish worship in the form of liturgical dance for over 10 years.

Although there may be a smattering of complaint about the weeds and creatures that love to invade our "Sunny Salt Spring Garden", the wonders of nature and the beauty of walking in the garden, will inspire the greater part of the musical festivities. The lovely "Flower Duet" from Delibes' opera Lakme provides a tranquil vehicle for a dance enveloped by the scent of jasmine, while roses form the theme of instrumental interludes for cello and organ.

The Flower Festival opens its doors to the public on Tuesday from 1 - 4pm and on Wednesday from 11.30 - 2.30. Entrance is by donation and visitors will have the opportunity to win floral door prizes.

Wednesday's event includes the Music and Munch recital which begins at 12.10 pm and is followed by a delicious optional lunch for $5.50.
