Vesuvius is located about ten or fifteen minutes to the northwest of Ganges, BC. It has beach
access with stairs leading down from the street above, but there is limited parking. Vesuvius is mostly
residential, but there is a small grocery store, a restaurant and a pub all clustered around the ferry terminal.
BC Ferries sails back and forth between Vesuvius and Crofton on Vancouver Island usually every hour. Duncan is
about 20 minutes south of Crofton, and Nanaimo — the hub of Vancouver Island — is
about 45 minutes to the north.
There are two ferry terminals at Nanaimo with sailings from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay, and from the newer
Duke Point terminal to Tsawwassen. Horseshoe Bay is just north of Vancouver, and Tsawwassen is to the south
near the US border.
Victoria is only a couple of hours drive south from the Crofton ferry terminal over the scenic Malahat
Highway. Vesuvius could be the beginning or the end of a scenic loop around the northern end of the island. Whether
stopping for lunch or watching the sunset after a full day exploring Salt Spring Island.
Unfortunately, the Vesuvius Inn, right
by the ferry terminal, closed several years ago. |
